The cooler weather is coming around, FINALLY, and I am starting to crave those tried and true fall/winter recipes that my family loves. During the fall and winter, the crock pot is my best friend and you can almost guarantee that there will be a pot of chili or taco soup. Sometimes, the favorites can use a little pick me up but I have a hard time deciding what spices to use to give it that much needed kick!
Burlap and Barrel Chef’s Choice Collection is the Perfect Gift for your Foodie!
Each box comes carefully packaged and includes six specialty spices. All spices are organically grown and naturally harvested from countries such as India, Afghanistan, and Guatemala. Most spices have many purposes and can be used in savory or sweet applications. The Chef’s Choice Collection is constantly updated with new and interesting spices and makes an excellent gift for the curious home cook.
The 2018 Chef’s Choice Collection currently includes:
2018 Harvest Turmeric (1.7 oz in a glass jar)
Grown and hand-harvested in Karnataka, India and has a sweet, floral flavor without the metallic bitterness found in lower quality turmeric.
Black Urfa Chili (1.8 oz in a glass jar)
Comes from Urfa, Turkey, where it has been grown and cured for centuries. It has a rich, malty flavor with a lingering burn.
Cured Sumac (2.3 oz in a glass jar)
Comes from Gaziantep, Turkey. Preserved with a salt-based curing process. It has a tart, sweet, salty and slightly fermented flavor.
Cobanero Chili (0.3 oz in a glass jar – 15-25 full chilis)
Only grown in the mountains around the city of Cobán in Guatemala. It has a lush, fruity aroma and a fierce, smoky heat. Use caution – at 30,000-50,000 in Scoville units
Desert Fennel (1.5 oz in a glass jar)
Comes from an organic farm in central Egypt, where fennel has been cultivated for millennia. It’s grown in an oasis in the desert, irrigated with water from the Nile. Slight saltiness followed by a sharp vegetal sweetness at the finish.
Zanzibar Black Peppercorns (2.0 oz in a glass jar)
Rich chocolate-colored peppercorn berry with dense wrinkles and a bright, fruity spiciness.
Spices for Every Occasion
Most of the spices were flavors that I had never tried before and I was eager to put them to the test. My favorite was Cobanero Chili as I tossed a few peppers into my home-cooked chili to give it a good, strong kick and my boyfriend kept coming back for seconds and thirds! We also incorporated Desert Fennel and Zanzibar Black Peppercorns into my Secret Family Recipe Meat Marinade.
Other applications of these spices include using 2018 Harvest Turmeric in a sweet, milk Turmeric tea or adding the organic Turmeric powder to your favorite mask or moisturizer for a healing beauty effect. We’ve found that Cured Sumac works great in seasoning fish as it has a slight lemon flavor and Black Urfa Chili is great for crusting meat and giving it a great smoky flavor.
