Weekends are some of the greatest times to participate in fun family activities. My husband, myself, and our three children are avid movie watchers so going to the theater, streaming movies, or renting DVDs is one of the best ways we know to spend our down time together. I usually make popcorn, buy our favorite candies and stock up on soft drinks. We snuggle into the couches with our snuggly blankets and it’s off to make-believe land we go!
I have been a fan of actor, Chris Pine, since his appearance in the Star Trek movie a few years ago. Casey Affleck, who portrays a member of the doomed ship, is another one of our favorite actors. The subject matter of The Finest Hours is full of drama and action. Based on the true story of the Coast Guard small-boat rescue of a disabled ship, half of which was ripped away and sunk, this gripping tale has us completely enthralled and rooting for the success of the mission to save the men still alive on the crippled stern-section of the T-2 oil tanker. Chris Pine portrays Captain Bernie Webber of the Coast Guard, commanding a small 12-seat rescue boat sent to try to save the survivors of the rapidly sinking tanker.
I love movies that describe historical times and places. The Finest Hour is set in 1952 during a massive winter storm off the northeastern coast of the U.S., in the Cape Cod area. To attempt a sea rescue during such harsh weather takes some major guts, and though Captain Bernie Webber is a fairly soft-spoken, agreeable sort of man he totally rises to the occasion and gets the job done. In Webber’s view, “We all live, or we all die.” A truly heroic statement for a heroic man.
This heroic action-thriller is based on the extraordinary true story of the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history. In 1952, a massive winter storm strikes off the coast of Cape Cod, ripping a T-2 oil tanker in half and trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly sinking stern. When word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard, four men led by Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) set out in a 12-seat boat on a daring mission to rescue the stranded men, braving freezing cold, 60-foot waves and hurricane-force winds, and guided by Webber’s vow that “We all live, or we all die.” Packed with thrilling, larger-than-life action and anchored in a belief in the strength of the human spirit, The Finest Hours is a triumph.
