It’s Friday night and time to prepare a family favorite. Dinner rolls. Not just any type of dinner rolls. Addicting Dinner Rolls. I stumbled across this recipe a while back on Pinterest, but I would like to think of it as fate. At first I thought it was a some sort of click-bait, but then I was lead to a YouTubers channel by the name ‘She’s in her Apron’ featuring this recipe and I was smitten. So I tossed on my Coddies Bread Loafers and got to work. Might as well dress the part right??

I noticed there was no actual written out recipe for these insanely addicting dinner rolls after the first time I made them. So I thought why not pull it together for you all to have on hand? With my feet feeling nice and toasty, I began writing like a mad woman and started baking. I gathered all the ingredients, put on some music and danced like I was a ‘Fly Girl‘ in my bread loafers.

Ingredients

4 ½ tsp. of yeast

½ cup of WARM water

2 cups of water equally divided

¾ cups of sugar AND 1 tsp. of sugar

2 tsp. salt

1 cup of shortening ( I prefer the Crisco’s Butter Flavor Shortening)

4 eggs

7 ½ cups of flour

Now, to the good stuff, putting it all together. This recipe does take some time. I do not mean a long time to physically prepare in general. But you do have to let the dough sit overnight in the fridge. So it is best to prepare the dough the night before you plan on serving the rolls. Remember, this recipe is not exactly gluten free like the loafs on my feet, but I am sure you can make the proper adjustments and substitutions to do so.

Preparation

First, in a small bowl, combine 4 ½ tsp of yeast with a ½ cup of warm water. Then add 1 tsp sugar and mix. After all three ingredients are combined, let the mixture rise for 3-5 minutes. Set aside.

Next, in a pot, boil 1 cup of water. Once the water begins to rumble, remove it from the heat. You will then stir in 1 cup of shortening, making sure it melts into the boiling water.

Then, in a large mixing bowl combine 4 eggs, ¾ cup of sugar, 1 cup of water and 2 tsp of salt. Combine the ingredients. You will then begin to add the risen yeast mixture you set aside and the water/shortening mixture. Make sure all the ingredients are blended well.

The final ingredient, flour! Begin to add 7 ½ cups of flour to your mixture and combine until all ingredients are well blended into a sticky dough.

Finally, pour your sticky dough into a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a wet kitchen cloth or cheesecloth. Then place it in your fridge overnight or for approx. 8-12 hours.

The Next Day

It is here, the day we have been waiting for. Time to bake that bread! I slipped on my Coddies, and shuffled my way into the kitchen. I didn’t have to worry about slipping, because these loafs have grips on the bottom of the sole. So there is no need to worry about busting my buns.

Approximately, two hours before baking, remove your sticky dough from the fridge. Roll your dough into large meatball sized rolls and place them onto a greased pan.

TIP: This recipe makes approx. 60 rolls. Once you roll your sticky dough into balls, this is the perfect opportunity to divide your rolls into what will be frozen for future use and what will be baked at that moment. I recommend freezing your sticky dough balls on sheet pan then transfer them into a freezer safe bag once frozen. This allows them to keep their shape while frozen and not form a solid lump of dough while freezing.

Once you have all the rolls you want to bake, allow those soon to be addicting balls of joy to rise for about 1 ½-2 hours.

The Finish Line

Time for the best part. Baking. Place the risen rolls in a preheated 400 degree oven for 10-15 minutes (This approximate time is given depending on style and make of your oven. Therefore, bake times may vary) and let the oven work. In the meantime, do some light reading or visit the Coddies website to do a little gift shopping for family and friends (or yourself.. no judgement here).

Serve these rolls along with your favorite entree, a nice cool beverage and of course a dessert. If you don’t want to go through all that work, these simply would make a great snack. Add your favorite jam or butter to your buns and your taste buds will love you.

Remember, nothing says ‘warm and cozy’ this holiday season than toasty Coddies loafers on your feet, and warm buttered rolls in your belly. Enjoy!
