I really enjoy reading books written from a historical frame of reference, fiction or non-fiction. Set during World War II, The Movie Star and Me by Kelly Durham, is an interesting read about one man’s brief experience on the front lines of battle resulting in an injury that sends him back stateside to California where he must re-assimilate into American civilian society and try to figure out what he plans to do with his life, personally and professionally.
I like to read before bedtime, so I always have a small stack of books on the nightstand that I am currently reading. I can get bored easily, so I am always reading at least 2-3 books at any given time. It’s saying a lot that during the time I was reading this book that it was my first choice of reading material just about every night until I finished reading it.
It was interesting to read about the movie business of ‘Old Hollywood.’ I was completely drawn into the story, particularly regarding how things between Frank (the main character) and Vera (an up and coming Hollywood starlet) would end up. Often I was surprised at myself because the writing is such that I forgot (several times) that I was reading a fiction novel — it just seemed like an autobiography of someone’s life! Kudos, Mr. Durham.
The Movie Star and Me is the first novel in the author’s Frank Russell-Pacific Pictures Series. Based on how much I enjoyed this book, I can’t wait to read other titles in the series!!
Synopsis:
Frank Russell is a star-struck young Army veteran when he stumbles into a job at Pacific Pictures studios in Hollywood. Frank, just back from the war in the Pacific, immediately runs into the studio’s biggest stars, including the beautiful, ambitious Vera Vance—and gets off on the wrong foot! But when Frank demonstrates his leadership abilities to studio founder Abe Baum, relationships change quickly! Movie magic, labor strikes, HUAC committee hearings and the business of show business are revealed as a colorful cast of characters fight for their self-interests–with surprising results.
