Every single morning, my sons and my husband roll out of bed, do their morning routine, and head out the door. Time and time again, I notice the one thing that they can care less to bother with is their hair. It’s almost as if none of the men in my life even bother to comb it!
Why is that? Is it only my boys? Can ANYONE else relate?
Maybe bedhead is in. (I really hope not)
I have purchased ‘gels’ and ‘styling creams’ but there is always a complaint about how sticky the products feel or ‘crusty’ their hair becomes. One of my sons came home from school upset one day because his hair turned white! Needless to say when this mommy asks him to style his hair, he is not having it. In regards to my husband, his answer is simply a ‘hat’.
Let’s set the record straight, the men in my life have great hair, especially my sons. Their mane is so thick and luscious, and to be honest, I am a bit jealous of their locks. I wanted to focus on my sons to help them find their own sense of style. They express themselves through their clothing, so why not their hair?
First thing is first. The haircut. We were on a hunt for a barber that can style their hair based on face shape to give them a look they will love. The same buzz cut was getting old and to be honest my sons were not too thrilled with their haircut style.
We found the perfect barber who knew exactly what she’s doing. That’s right I said ‘SHE’. A rarity, but #LadyBarbers are starting to break that mold and leave their imprint on the barber scene. Natasha new exactly how to cut and style a young mans hair exactly suited to their face shape, wants & needs. Her credentials are astonishing, so she is a must visit if you are ever in the Waterbury, CT area.
My sons came out of the ‘Gents BarberShop‘ looking so handsome. They both had a nice low fade and their hairlines were cleaned up (FINALLY!). A perfect hairstyle for the winter. The best part, their hair was manageable so they can style it on their own. We just needed to find the right products to match their needs.
The Hair Product Hunt
As a family, we have tried so many products. There was always some issue. Whether the hold wasn’t there, hair felt stiff or a white cast was left behind; my sons wanted nothing to do with these type of products. It was something that was always an ‘uncomfortable’ concept for them.
This is where BluMaan came into our lives. I was not sure what to think about the pomades, creams and oils, but I thought let’s give it a try. First, I introduced BluMaan Discovery Styling Kit to my sons. They were curious as to what each product did. The packaging really had them intrigued, as did the hair product themselves. It was something they had never seen or used in their hair before.
BluMaan had five different formulas that came in a palm sized tub. Each served a different purpose for different types of hair. This was perfect to test and try to see which ones would be a good fit. I already knew my sons wanted something with a lighter hold, and BluMaan had products just for those needs.
The Five BluMaan Basics
The Original Styling Meraki was really unique. It wasn’t exactly a right fit for my boys at this point, but this stuff was real cool. It is a heavy, thick, creamy wax, that has a very strong hold and is not too shiny. This is perfect for longer and/or thicker mens hair that requires a little blow drying to style. As soon as baseball season hits, my younger son wants a ‘faux hawk’. The Meraki would be perfect to achieve that look.
The Hybrid and the Cavalier are both clays. The Hybrid is a favorite that my sons found easy to use. It did not leave their hair stiff and it looked so natural and perfectly styled. They were able to run the product through their own hair without my help. There were no complaints about stiffness or crunchy bits, which is exactly what we were looking for.
The Cavalier was a bit heavier and harder for my sons to work with. I recommend using this one while your hair is damp, if it’s dry, it will definitely tug at it. It had a super strong hold, but still had a natural look to it. If you have thick and/or curly hair, this would be perfect for you.
Clays in general are great to give your hair a fuller look and maintains any frizz you may have.
The Monarch, which is a paste, was another favorite. This product was creamier and easier to handle. It had a perfect hold that is great for school picture day. The Monarch was also perfect for combing back the hair. It did not look stiff, and you were still able to run your fingers through it.
The final one is the Fifth Sample, which is a pomade. This one did not make it into the everyday wear category, but we had a lot of fun with it. The Fifth Sample not only held your slick back or mohawk in place, it also had this great shine to it. An interesting ingredient that sets this pomade apart from others, is that it’s water based.
My husband has used oil-based pomades in the past and it was tough to wash out. The Fifth Sample peaked his interest because of how different the ingredients were. He loved that this was so much easier to wash out compared to oil-based. A huge and unexpected win for the husband.
Pump Up the Volume
We decided to have a little fun with BluMaan Ascend Volume Cream. It came in an easy to pump bottle and has a great creamy consistency. We used about a dime size on damp hair, massaged it down to the roots and blow dried.
It required a little more work, but this was by far my favorite to use on my boys. Their hair had this gorgeous volume to it and looked completely natural. Best part, you could run your fingers through it.
My sons found their personal style, and some great products from BluMaan to go along with it. The one little teeny thing that I am always concerned about is if they really wash their hair well. BluMaan created an amazing product called Cloud Control, a hair oil, which can be perfect for this concern that I had.
Hair oils have been around for centuries and have some great properties. There have been claims that they can really slow down hair loss and help promote hair growth. They have also been known to condition, soften, and strengthen your hair. Personally, I adore hair oils. I use them often and love the nourishing look and protection it provides.
Cloud Control was extremely easy to use, and more importantly my boys did not fuss that there was ‘an extra step’. As soon as they came out of the shower, I added 4 drops to their hair and rubbed it in. THAT’S IT! My son’s hair has never felt softer and looked healthier. Not to mention their hair smelled incredible!
We are happy to say, we found a routine that our sons could get on board with. My husband and I think our boys finally appreciate the hair they have. It was a bit of work, but was worth it. First, we helped them find their style with the right barber (Barberess for our sons, thank you Natasha!). Then moved onto to finding hair products that worked for their needs and comfort. (Thankfully BluMaan gave us so much to choose from) Finally, we introduced a little extra ‘hair care‘ in their hygiene regimen. With some time and effort, my sons are finally discovering their unique selves.
