Exploring Southwestern Michigan Wineries

Exploring Southwestern Michigan Wineries

One of our favorite spots for a family getaway is Douglas/Saugatuck, Michigan. I think it’s safe to say we’re officially one of the regulars. There is something about spending a few days at the lake house that makes you forget the daily chaos and brings you back to a state of peace. On our most recent trip, I was fortunate enough to have my parents travelling with us. This allowed my husband and me to have a few opportunities for “dates” while our son spent time with his grandparents. Whenever we visit the Saugatuck area, we never miss two of our favorite wineries: Fenn Valley and Hudsonville.

My Husband and I are ready to explore two of our favorite Michigan wineries!

Fenn Valley is located just a few minutes from Douglas, nestled in the countryside of nearby Fennville. The city of Hudsonville is world famous for their delectable ice cream. However, Hudsonville’s best kept secret is the winery.

My husband and I have been to Fenn Valley Winery and Vineyards many times and we’ve always had such a pleasant experience. This family operated winery and vineyard was established in 1973. The staff is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to answer any questions you may have. From fruity/fun to dry/sophisticated, you’re sure to find a wine to please your palate. Wine Tasting inside the Fenn Valley Wine Cellar. Delicious!

Our first visit, we were lucky enough to have an outdoor Wine-Tasting Tour with the owner, Doug. I’ve always enjoyed wine, but never really put too much thought into how it’s made. The wine-tasting tour provided me with a lot of knowledge in a fun, relaxed environment.

We’ve taken the tour multiple times and always met very friendly people from other cities and states (I guess a little wine makes us all socialize a little easier, right?)  On the tour, you will be able to sample lots of their award-winning wines, receive a take-home wine glass and coupon towards your purchase in the wine cellar.

We LOVE our Portable Wine Glasses from Fenn Valley. The Saugatuck Lakeshore is the perfect place to use them.

If you don’t have time for a tour, stop in and sample a few of the wines in the wine cellar. You’re permitted three free samples of anything you’d like; don’t forget to try their new hard ciders! Shopping for bottles to take home is always a relaxing experience and the cashier is always happy to help find a bottle of wine that you’ll enjoy.

I also recommend their portable wine glasses. They are perfect for camping, boating, and highly durable! As a ritual, my husband and I always buy a bottle and have a glass (in our portable cups) on the beach. There’s nothing like tasting that Michigan, lake-effect wine with our toes in the sand, watching the sunset, and the relaxing sound of waves.

Hudsonville Winery is one of the most unpretentious wineries I’ve ever been to. Look carefully while you’re driving down the road or you just might miss it. When you step inside, it’s very cozy and welcoming. If you don’t notice the wine at first, you’ll immediately detect the smell of delicious food.

Dinner is served! Angus Beef and with Homemade Beer Cheese Sauce on a Pretzel Roll, Bavarian Soft Pretzels, and a Glass of Tres Amici.

Be sure to pull up a chair, grab a menu, and get ready to eat! My husband and I are all about quality comfort food and we didn’t leave disappointed.  We decided to order the Angus Beef and Cheddar. This sandwich is a work of art; shaved roast beef on a pretzel roll with their homemade beer cheese sauce and zesty horseradish. If you’re looking for a great appetizer, I highly recommend the Bavarian Soft Pretzels; soft pretzel bites covered in Parmesan, garlic, and herb seasonings and served with their homemade beer cheese. I can’t help myself! We always come home with plenty to share with friends and family.

I was in the mood for a fruiter glass of wine and ordered the Hooterville Cutie (A citrus blend, perfect for summer). My husband usually prefers a drier wine and ordered a glass of the Tres Amici (Smooth blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc). They also have an amazing brewery; my father is a big fan of the Citrifical Force (an IPA with a citrus kick). Here’s a complete list of their Wine and Beer.

Hudsonville Winery has fun events like a trivia night; with the great food and beverages, this is a terrific meeting spot for friends or a fun date night. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, which makes the 25-30 minute drive from Douglas to Hudsonville always worth it. Be sure to pick up a few bottles of wine or beer on your way out and don’t forget to enjoy something yummy or a chilled glass of vino on their outdoor patio.
