Growing up in Florida you become a bit of a seafood snob. When you’re able to catch it yourself, you know how good fresh fish tastes.  Of course, this isn’t an option for everyone, which is why most fish is bought in-store. In recent years, however, many types of seafood have been overfished or produced in farms. This can compromise both flavor, quality, and the underwater ecosystem. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to when you choose to purchase wild, sustainably caught fish.

One brand on such a mission is Wild Planet.  All of their products are sustainably caught. This means they don’t overfish the oceans, damage the habitat, or catch juvenile or non-targeted species. It’s a philosophy I fully support.

It aligns with the habits I was taught as a kid. Every time we went out on the boat, my parents always made sure we respected the water and the beings living below the surface.  We never caught more than we could eat. If the seafood was too small or not in season, we always returned it to the ocean. Though we had to leave a few anchors in the sea when they got stuck, we never considered the water our garbage can.

Wild Planet was kind enough to send me several of their products to try, including their Skipjack Tuna in a pouch. Though I’ve had their canned tuna before, this was the first time I tried the Skipjack pouch. I really enjoy both varieties. You can taste the difference in this sustainably caught fish. It’s like throwing out a line and catching it fresh yourself.

All of Wild Planet’s tuna is 100% pole and line caught in Central or North Pacific Ocean. Allowing the fish to remain in its natural habitat ensures you are getting the freshest fish every time. The skipjack tuna contains no salt and is packed raw without oil, water or fillers. It is then cooked once to help it maintain its rich abundance of DHA and EPA Omega 3’s. Consuming Omega 3’s is good for your mind, body, and soul.

There are lots of ways to enjoy tuna, but one of my favorites is the tuna melt. I like to add a bit of mayo, white pepper, and garlic salt to my tuna. This is followed by chopped celery and carrots. I then place the mixture on my favorite sprouted bread and top it off with cheddar cheese. In this case, I used vegan cheddar cheese.

Wild Planet was also kind enough to send me their sustainably caught Wild Mackerel and Wild Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Just like the tuna, both of these skinless and boneless fillets are delicious. This variety features very simple ingredients, hand-fillet fresh fish, organic olive oil and sea salt.

These Atlantic Ocean sardines and mackerels are fished using purse seine methods. This sustainable method targets only the desired species. It also helps to eliminate catching fish you don’t want and doesn’t damage the ecosystem.

Wild Planet’s sardines and mackerels are rich in protein and EPA/DHA Omega 3s. I like to add them to salads for that extra punch of protein and salty, smokiness. I find them especially tasty in Caesar salad. They complement the creamy dressing perfectly. Mackerel also works well as a tuna substitute, while sardines are a great addition to your favorite bruschetta recipe.

Snacks. It’s an all-important segment of every shopper’s grocery list and a constantly evolving one for me. We love snacks at my house, but get bored with the same old ones every week. As we close in on the third month of 2019, those healthy eat resolutions might be dwindling. Let’s face it, keeping up those healthy eating habits can be hard when that sweet tooth comes calling. Luckily, you can indulge anytime you want with Emmy’s Organics Superfood Cookies.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had Emmy’s Organics. I remember first stumbling across them with my mom at a Starbucks. She was undergoing cancer treatment and had given up processed sugars. Instead, opting for more natural options, such as dates, agave, honey, coconut sugar, and maple syrup. We were always looking for new recipes or treats to try that would allow her to enjoy something sweet.

You can imagine our excitement when we read the ingredient list on the back of Emmy’s Organics; organic coconut, organic agave syrup, organic almond flour, organic coconut oil, etc. Finally, a quick sweet treat she could eat without feeling guilty. The main ingredient is coconut, so if you like coconut, you will definitely love these little bits. The coconut brings a nice richness to each cookie. It also pairs nicely with flavors like peanut butter and matcha.

One of the coolest things about Emmy’s Organics is all the recipes they’ve developed to use with their cookies. You can check out the entire list on their blog, but for now, I’m going to share the one I tried out. It’s a delicious Cookie Dough Shake. (Note: Since I didn’t have the Chocolate Chip Coconut Cookies, I used the Dark Cacao.)

This shake is very easy to make and super delicious. It’s rich and creamy, and you’d never know it contained frozen riced cauliflower. Honestly, it tastes like a regular milkshake with the added bonus of cookies and chocolate chips. And the serving size is pretty generous so you could drink it alone or share it.

Emmy's Organics Cookie Dough Shake

A rich, healthy shake you can enjoy anytime. 
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 ripe banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup frozen riced cauliflower
  • 1 tsp creamy peanut butter
  • 1 scoop collagen peptides (optional)
  • 3 Emmy's Organics Chocolate Chip Coconut Cookies
  • Dark chocolate chips for garnish

Instructions

  • In a high speed blender, blend all ingredients except cookies and chocolate chips until smooth.
  • Pour shake into a glass, freeze for 30 minutes.
  • Break up two cookies, stir in frozen shake.
  • Top with one more crumbled cookie and a few chocolate chips.

In our area of North Carolina, we’ve been battling bouts of snow and rain producing flood conditions. You’ll Need:

  • 1 15 ounce can of Red Kidney Beans
  • 1 15 ounce can of Pinto Beans
  • 1 15 ounce can of Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 8 ounce can of Tomato Sauce
  • 1 8 ounce can of Sweet Corn (i used half a 15 ounce can because that’s all I had on hand)
  • 1 pound of ground beef (or your preference of ground meat, preferably something that is lean)
  • 1 16 ounce container of beef broth
  • 2 tbs Chili Powder
  • 1 tbs cumin (This is one of my favorites from the Chef’s Collection at Burlap and Barrel)
  • 1 tbs Paprika
  • 1 tbs Oregano
  • 1/2 tbs onion powder
  • 1/2 tbs garlic powder
  • 1 scoop of Thrive 6 FreshCap Mushroom Extract
  • If you like spice, add whole chilies until you reach the desired heat index (see my favorite from Burlap and Barrel)
  • salt and pepper to taste

To cook:

  • Brown the ground beef with the above mentioned seasonings (this is why you want something lean, as I typically do not drain fat and cook the meat with seasoning from the start to really impart some flavor)
  • Add the additional canned ingredients and stir
  • Depending on how ‘soupy’ you like your chili, add in the beef broth until you get your desired consistency
  • bring to a boil and reduce to the lowest temperature and simmer for 2-3 hours
  • Serve with CORNBREAD or saltine crackers, sour cream, and cheese.
  • **BONUS – you could put this in the crock pot in the morning and it will be ready for supper at the end of the day
