Whether my alarm goes off or not, I don’t meet the morning with glee. After untangling myself from the sheets, I stumble out of bed with messy hair, blurry eyes, and the inability to create coherent sentences. As you can imagine, breakfast is not always on my mind. Counting down when I can go back to sleep is more my speed, unless I have something delicious to get my morning routine going.

A few years ago I switched to a more plant-based diet. One of the easiest places to make this change came at breakfast. Usually this in the form of a green smoothie of some type, but this isn’t always convenient. Let’s face it, when you’re not a morning person, busting out the blender and the measuring cups can be a chore.

This is why I was so excited to add Barbaras Puffins Cereal and Elmhurst Milks to my morning routine. They’re a quick, delicious healthy way to help me start my day.

Cereal + Milk = Delicious

One of the reasons I begrudgingly ate cereal as a kid was because I never liked the taste of milk. Most of the time, I would eat my cereal out of the box or pour it in the bowl plain. This is how much I don’t like dairy milk.

I was so excited when dairy alternatives started arriving at my grocery store. Back then, there was only one alternative option. Today, I can choose from Oat, Almond, and Cashew.

Before Elmhurst kindly sent me some of their milks for review, I had tried their Oat Milk and was already a fan. One of the things I like most about these unsweetened plant-based milks is how few ingredients they contain. Their Almond and Cashew have two ingredients, nuts and filtered water, while their Oat has three, water, oats and salt.

These milks are rich, creamy and free from fillers, artificial flavors, and sugars. They are also the perfect pairing for Barbaras Puffins Cereal.

Another reason I gave up on the traditional milk and cereal was because of how mushy my cereal would get. If I didn’t eat it quick enough it would become a bowl of yuckiness. So, I was a bit skeptical about adding Puffins to my morning routine. Would these bite-sized puffs hold up to the Elmhurst milk?

In reality, I had nothing to worry about because they are made for mixing with milk. They stay crunchy, while also absorbing just enough of the milk creaminess.

The brand was kind enough to send me two of the cereal varieties, Peanut Butter and Honey Rice. Not only do I enjoy their crispy texture, but I also love the taste. They are just right amount of hearty and sweet.

Another Puffins perk is that they are low in sugar and available in vegan and vegetarian options. Their peanut butter (6 grams of sugar per serving) is low fat, vegan, and made from corn and whole grain oat.  The Honey Rice (5 grams of sugar per serving) is vegetarian, low fat, rich in fiber and made from gluten-free whole grain brown rice.

Did I mention the also have cinnamon, peanut butter and chocolate, and pumpkin cereals? I can definitely see them making an appearance in my morning routine very soon. I wonder which version of Elmhurst milks I should pour over each first? Something tells me all of their milks would pair oh so well with all of these cereals.

Allergy Free Milk & Cookies + More

It seems like everyone is allergic to something these days. Unfortunately, even I’ve developed a few food sensitivities as I’ve gotten older. This can prevent you from enjoying the foods you love, but not always. Thanks to brands like Planet Oat and Enjoy Life you can have your allergy-free cookies and milk, and so much more.

Both brands were kind enough to send me a nice selection of their products. I had such a fun time testing them out. I mean eating cookies and drinking dark chocolate flavored oat milk is such hard work. And I take my taste testing very seriously, lol.

Allergy-Free Goodness

I’m a sucker for a good cookie and some flavored milk. So, of course, the first items I dove into were the Enjoy Life Crunchy Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies and Double Chocolate Brownie Bites.

As a fan of Enjoy Life, I have purchased several of their sweet and savory products before but had yet to try their minis. I like how they come in convenient snack packs for on the go enjoyment. The cookies have such a nice crunch to them, and the brownie bites are full of chewy, chocolatey goodness.

Allergy Free Enjoy Life Cookies & Planet Oat Milk

It’s kind of hard to only eat one bag. These delicious treats, and all Enjoy Life products, are free from gluten, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, casein, soy, egg, sesame, sulfites, lupin, mustard, fish, and shellfish.

Now no cookie or brownie would be complete without some oat milk. And these treats pair perfectly with the Planet Oat Dark Chocolate and Vanilla Oat Milks. They are both rich in flavor and free from dairy, peanuts, gluten, soy, lactose, tree nuts, artificial flavor and colors, as well as artificial preservatives.

Planet Oat also doesn’t add sugar to their oat milks, with the exception of the Dark Chocolate. Since I love me some dark chocolate, I’m okay with a little added sugar in this case. This Oat Milk is so, so good, as is the vanilla. It tastes like real vanilla, not manufactured or processed.

Allergy Free Mini Chips

I have a confession to make, sometimes I like to snack on chocolate chips. They are the best part of the cookie, after all, and these mini’s from Enjoy Life make it easy to indulge. You can take them with you on the go or add them to your favorite dessert. I like to do both, especially when they are allergy-free and won’t upset my sensitive digestion.

In this instance, I made a rich and creamy, yogurt parfait. First, I placed some granola in the bottom of my mason jar, then topped it with some vanilla, dairy-free yogurt. I followed this up with the Enjoy Life Mini Chips. Then, I repeated this layering until I reached the top of my jar.

Planet Oat also has some fun recipes on their site that would pair perfectly with the mini chips. I can’t wait to make their brownies, chia pudding, smoothie bowl, or even add them to some banana pancakes.

Getting your protein in doesn’t mean eating the same old thing. You can have your protein with a side of allergy-free chocolate in the form of Enjoy Life’s Chocolate Protein Bites. I will admit these were not my favorite. I’m not a big fan of fruit and chocolate. The dried raspberry flavor, mixed with the chocolate, didn’t do it for me.

However, I did find these bites to be rich and filling. I do think they would make an excellent protein snack for whenever the mood calls. Enjoy Life does have these bites in other flavors, which I am curious to try. The banana and sunseed butter sound more to my liking.

Oat Milk Smoothies

We can’t live on chocolate alone, though it would be nice. One of my favorite ways to satisfy my sweet tooth is with fruit. I can never have enough, which is why I like to make smoothies on a regular basis. It’s pretty much what I have for breakfast every day. I also occasionally make one after a workout.

I tend to make one of two types of smoothies, the classic green or the pure fruit. No matter what type of smoothie I’m creating, allergy-free oat milk is a staple ingredient. For the one I made above, I used a combo of the Planet Oat Vanilla and Extra Creamy Original. I also like to use the Original Oat Milk as well. All three are rich in vitamins and minerals and give my smoothies a creamy consistency and flavor.

If you’re curious about the particular smoothie in the picture, it’s the Vegan Reset’s Raspberry-Peanut Butter Shake. It consists of 2 frozen bananas, a cup of frozen raspberries, 3/4 cup plant-based milk, and 2 tablespoons peanut butter.

I tend to add an entire cup of oat milk to help the frozen fruit blend better. I also sometimes substitute the peanut butter for whatever nut butter I have on hand, and occasionally use blueberries instead of raspberries. Both are equally delicious. It’s like drinking a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. So, so good.

As we close in on the third month of 2019, those healthy eat resolutions might be dwindling. Let’s face it, keeping up those healthy eating habits can be hard when that sweet tooth comes calling. Luckily, you can indulge anytime you want with Emmy’s Organics Superfood Cookies.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had Emmy’s Organics. I remember first stumbling across them with my mom at a Starbucks. She was undergoing cancer treatment and had given up processed sugars. Instead, opting for more natural options, such as dates, agave, honey, coconut sugar, and maple syrup. We were always looking for new recipes or treats to try that would allow her to enjoy something sweet.

You can imagine our excitement when we read the ingredient list on the back of Emmy’s Organics; organic coconut, organic agave syrup, organic almond flour, organic coconut oil, etc. Finally, a quick sweet treat she could eat without feeling guilty. My mom chose the Vanilla Bean and I chose the Dark Cacao. Both were sweet, chewy and delicious. At the time, we didn’t realize there were many other flavors to be had.

In fact, these yummy superfood cookies come in eight different flavors, including Pumpkin Spice, Matcha, Golden Milk, Peanut Butter, Lemon Ginger, Vanilla Bean, Chocolate Chip, and Dark Cacao. Every cookie is made with 100% organic ingredients. They are also NON-GMO, vegan, kosher, dairy-free and gluten-free.

The main ingredient is coconut, so if you like coconut, you will definitely love these little bits. The coconut brings a nice richness to each cookie. It also pairs nicely with flavors like peanut butter and matcha.

One of the coolest things about Emmy’s Organics is all the recipes they’ve developed to use with their cookies. You can check out the entire list on their blog, but for now, I’m going to share the one I tried out. It’s a delicious Cookie Dough Shake. (Note: Since I didn’t have the Chocolate Chip Coconut Cookies, I used the Dark Cacao.)

This shake is very easy to make and super delicious. It’s rich and creamy, and you’d never know it contained frozen riced cauliflower. Honestly, it tastes like a regular milkshake with the added bonus of cookies and chocolate chips. And the serving size is pretty generous so you could drink it alone or share it.

Emmy's Organics Cookie Dough Shake

A rich, healthy shake you can enjoy anytime. 
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 ripe banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup frozen riced cauliflower
  • 1 tsp creamy peanut butter
  • 1 scoop collagen peptides (optional)
  • 3 Emmy's Organics Chocolate Chip Coconut Cookies
  • Dark chocolate chips for garnish

Instructions

  • In a high speed blender, blend all ingredients except cookies and chocolate chips until smooth.
  • Pour shake into a glass, freeze for 30 minutes.
  • Break up two cookies, stir in frozen shake.
  • Top with one more crumbled cookie and a few chocolate chips.

I don’t like to drink my calories unless I’m having a smoothie or a chai tea latte. Like most people, I try to stick to healthy drinks, like water and tea. Lately, I’ve been into some very unique choices in the form of CBD infused tea and birch water.

When I first heard about a drink made from the water flowing through birch trees, I was both intrigued and apprehensive. What exactly is birch water and how does it taste?

To learn more about how Yönalé is made, we first must travel to Finland. Well not actually travel, though it would be nice. I’ve always loved the Scandinavia/Nordic region of Europe. But I digress…

Every spring the roots of Finnish Birch trees begin to absorb the nutrients found in the water and soil. These nutrients, along with the water, accumulate in the sap of the tree. Due to pressurization, the sap begins to flow up the tree towards the leaves. The increase of sap, along with its flow to the top of the tree, is also given a boost by sun and evaporation.

Because this phenomenon is very short-lived, there is only a small window of time to harvest the water from the trees. Regardless, the makers of Yönalé take special care during the extraction process. While they want to harvest as much water as possible, they don’t want to harm the trees. They are big believers in practicing responsible foresting, while also preserving its delicate ecosystem.

When I’m not drinking water or smoothies, I like to enjoy a nice hot cup of tea, especially in the winter. It just warms me up, body and soul, with its healthy goodness. Lately, I’ve also been adding some CDB to my healthy drinks.
