Because Tom can’t read facial expressions, he doesn’t understand the other children, and they don’t understand him. Playing at the park can be lonely sometimes, but luckily Tom has his dog, Boo, and Boo is easy to understand. She wags her tail when she is happy and whines when she is sad.

One day, Boo gets her beard all knotted up in the bushes. A little girl named Lydia sees Boo and stops to talk to Tom. Boo’s beard has been tangled into a big smile, and Lydia explains to Tom that it’s the expression that someone makes when she or she is happy. She twists Boo’s beard into a variety of other expressions, explaining each one as she goes. When Lydia invites Tom and Boo to play with the other kids, they join her, and by the end, Tom understands the meaning of his own smile.

Boo's Beard book review

Children speak the truth. Children speak without a filter. My son has Autism, I can only imagine what other children think of my son. I am not looking forward to when he gets older. Will he be bullied? I cannot always protect him when he’s st school.

Boo’s Beard addresses differences, special needs and Autism. The book has a simple but effective message for children. Embrace everyone’s differences. Tom may be different but you can still be friends with him.

Boo is Tom’s only friend. Boo is Tom’s dog that helps him connect with other children. In a way, Boo helps break the ice when he meets other children.

Just like Tom, my son cannot read facial expressions right away. He understands when mom and dad are mad or upset. However, with some expressions, he is unable to understand let alone respond accordingly. Our son does things differently and it may take him and us longer to do things. We have learned to an accordingly.

When we travel, we leave extra early. This gives us plenty of time to stop when needed. Our life revolves around our son. While we do not have Boo of our own, we are right there for our son to teach him.

I am excited to add Boo’s Beard to our book library. I have been adding children’s books to our collection. This one is perfect for our family. I love the illustrations and the sweet storyline. This book teaches understanding, listening skills, patience and friendship.
