Mother’s Day is celebrated once a year. Every May, we are reminded to think about our Moms. This year, I wanted to do something nice for my own mom! It’s been a rough couple of years for our family.
We lost my brother in 2014 and as you can imagine, we were all in shock. His passing was unexpected.
My mom took on a lot of the responsibility of taking care of her mom. Her brothers did help but I think they helped in other ways as well. When my grandmother passed away in November 2015, I was sad. My mom called me a few days before she passed and said I should come visit. I was making plans to visit and my grandmother passed away that weekend. Instead, my husband and I made arrangements for our son and myself to go to the funeral. My son and I traveled by train from Chicago, IL to Northern California.
This year for Mother’s Day, I decided to have flowers delivered to my mom. I considered getting her chocolates but she doesn’t eat sugar. Thankfully, I thought of ordering flowers a few weeks before, so I had the flowers delivered the Wednesday before Mother’s Day. I noticed at checkout that florists charge much more if you choose to have flowers delivered on the day or even a few days before.
Choosing a vendor was not that difficult. I knew I did not want to go with a florist that let me down two different times several years apart. When the flowers arrived, my mom texted me and said they were beautiful and unexpected. She thought the package was from an auction she had won.
As a mom myself, I like to make time and treat myself each week! My husband is always working and rarely around, so it is always my son and myself.
I remember when I was pregnant with our son, I was so clueless. I had no idea what to expect. Over the years, I have learned so much!
Here are 4 Things I Learned As A Mom:
Sleep when you can. Take a nap when you need it. Even as a busy work at home mom, I find myself taking a quick nap. It can be overwhelming to work where you live because I am often torn between doing chores around the home or working!. Naps help me feel refreshed. I tend to take naps when my son is at school and my husband is asleep (he works evenings/overnight) or at work.
2. Treat Yourself
When I saw treat yourself, I mean pamper yourself. Do something nice for yourself. Get your quiet time in with a mud mask at home. Deep condition your hair with coconut oil. You don’t have to spend a fortune at a spa. Save time and money and pamper yourself at home!
Buy something new to add to your wardrobe! I love buying shoes and clothes for myself. I like to buy new things for myself every few months.
3. Take Care Of Yourself
A great way to take care of yourself is stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Depending on the weather, take a walk! Not only do you get fresh air, but you get your dose of Vitamin D. I’ve been walking twice each morning around our complex. I am going to walk more often throughout the day. It is nice to take a break and get outside!
4. Discover Unconditional Love
You will discover unconditional love. I discovered unconditional love the night our son was born. When I looked at him, it was over. He had me wrapped around his little finger.
I love being a mom. I have always enjoyed taking care of people. When our son arrived, it was perfect because I get to take care of him!
Being a mom is amazing but a lot of work. It takes time, patience, communication, sacrifices and more. Being a mom means putting someone else before your own needs.
