Just about all of us would like to eat healthier, but there is so much information (conflicting information, at that) out there. How are we supposed to know what to believe and which health regimen to follow? These questions and many more are answered in Should I Scoop Out My Bagel?: And 99 Other Answers to Your Everyday Diet and Nutrition Questions to Help You Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Live Healthy. Authors Ilyse Shapiro and Hallie Rich break it down and give you all the tools and the most relevant information you need to make a positive change to live a better, more healthy lifestyle.

As stated in the introduction, the authors are described as “Dear Abby meets Sex In The City meets Dr. Oz.” They cover questions from all areas of your life “from food and nutrition, to diet and weight loss, as well as healthy habits for the kitchen, bedroom, boardroom and even the bathroom — nothing is off limits!”

Just a small sampling of the questions covered:

  • Should I blot my pizza?
  • What’s the healthiest breakfast cereal?
  • Should I eat before I work out?
  • I have salads for lunch everyday, and I’m still not losing weight. What am I doing wrong?
  • Is sushi really as healthy as I think it is?
  • Are there food that can help speed up my metabolism?
  • Are energy drinks a healthy way to get a boost?
  • What are omega-3 fatty acids and why do I need them?

Also covered is the yogurt vs Greek yogurt issue, all the different kinds of milk on the market, healthy alternatives for peanut butter, the lowdown on all the fancy enhanced bottled waters lining the supermarket shelves, the smartest way to cook vegetables, which cooking oils to use in the kitchen, how to get enough proteins and nutrients as a vegetarian, the cleanse craze, probiotics, non-GMO foods, and so, so much more!

Should I Scoop Out My Bagel? by Ilyse Shapiro & Hallie Rich

This book really does tackle a lot of questions we all have about health and nutrition, without being a huge, heavy monster of a book that you look at and just stick on the shelf to read “later.” At just over 200 pages, it is about the length of any other book you might read for pleasure. The 100 questions listed in the Table of Contents are separated into two sections (The Inside Scoop On Nutrition & The Inside Scoop On A Healthy Lifestyle). The format of the book is simply Q&A. Each numbered question is posed and answered, one after the other. The responses are (mostly) brief and to the point, making this an easy book to pick up anytime and read as much or as little as you like — on the bus, between household chores, while waiting for the kids at soccer practice, on the toilet —– hey, they said nothing was off-limits, right?!

I really like that the book is formatted in a way that I can read it when I have time and also that it isn’t written in a way that makes me feel judged or like I’m being chastised or talked down to. It’s almost presented such that feel a little like I’m just having a friendly conversation with the authors, in a way. All of their advice is presented in a positive way, like they want to be in your corner and are cheering you on as you change your life for the better. I learned a lot while reading through this book, namely that no one is perfect, mistakes are normal and, above all, not to give up on trying to live healthier because every little bit counts. That was my takeaway from this book. What will your takeaway be?
