There are many ways to soothe one’s soul, to feed a need inside (identified or not) to promote personal wellness, relaxation, exhilaration, peace … whatever it is that you need to make you feel complete. I have many ways to feed my soul — writing, reading, crochet, cooking and baking, among others.
The one thing that I have yet to explore in any great depth is scent when it comes to personal wellness. I dabble a bit, and by that I mean with candles and room sprays, mostly. Diffusers and essential oils are a new world for me but I’m learning a lot from Gurunanda®, artnaturals, and EO® Products about how to use them in everyday life. If you’re interested in this topic but as clueless as I am, let’s take a look at it together and see what it’s all about.
So, aromatherapy is meant to promote serenity which is an awesome concept given modern lifestyles that can be incredibly stress-inducing. Scent has also been identified as something that can have a great impact on how we feel as well as on our emotions. It makes sense that using aromatherapy in our surroundings can promote a sense of well-being, harmony, and balance.
To explore this issue my family have been using two different brands of diffuser with essential oils as well as essential oils from a third brand. I may have fallen into the rabbit hole with this endeavor. I had no idea there were so many different essential oils that were developed to help with so many different lifestyles. Well, here we go… Try not to get lost!
These are the first diffusers I’ve ever owned. I’ll just put that out there. I do not claim to be an expert in any way, but I really like both of the brands that we are using. First up, the Gurunanda® Honeycomb™ Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser. First of all, it has a very small footprint, by which I mean that it doesn’t take up a lot of space. But, the aroma it emits is huge! I was surprised by how this tiny diffuser enveloped the entire room in fragrance. Thumbs up!!!
I chose to put this device in my youngest daughter’s bedroom. The white color of the unit matches her white bedroom furniture nicely and while she’s not a clutterbug, she does tend to “collect” random stuff all over the place. I wanted to add this decor to her space without encroaching on her style, and I think it’s pretty perfect for that.
This diffuser uses silent, ultrasonic waves to diffuse water containing your choice of a single essential oil or essential oil blend. It is really silent, you can’t even hear it when it’s running. Since my daughter has trouble getting to sleep at night, I decided the first try would be with Gurunanda® 100% Pure & Natural Essential Oil Calming Sleep Oil Blend. Featuring scents of lavender, marjoram, and chamomile it’s designed to help soothe, relax and comfort one’s senses helping you to fall asleep faster and rest more fully.
Single essential oils available are peppermint, lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, frankincense, lemon, rosemary, orange, grapefruit, Himalayan cedarwood, and patchouli. Each is available in a ½ oz. amber glass bottle.
Essential Oil Blends are where my particular interest seems to lie for my own personal use. With ten blends available, there’s something for everybody to love. Here’s a little bit about a few we’re using in our home.
Calming Sleep – comforts, relaxes, soothes and helps improve and accelerate sleep using a blend of lavender, marjarom, and chamomile.
Thrive – energizes, purifies, and boosts immunity with its blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary.
Slim – is the perfect adjunct to a healthy diet and exercise regimen. It supports healthy metabolism, boosts energy, manages cravings, improves circulation, and helps remove toxins using a blend of black pepper, grapefruit, cinnamon, lemon, peppermint, and ginger.
Breathe Easy – offers a natural remedy for nasal congestion and better overall respiratory health. This formula contains a blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, basil and rosemary essential oils. —– Source: Gurunanda®
Not only does this diffuser work extremely well, it’s simple to setup and use. Basically, you just take it out of the box, attach the cord, plug it in and go! The water reservoir holds 100mL of water (equivalent to approx. 7 tablespoons). Once you’ve poured the water in, just add a few drops of essential oil and turn it on.
The device won’t heat the water or oils, allowing them to work at full strength without getting broken down by heat. As a safety precaution, it will automatically turn off when the water level is too low. It can be set to be used continuously for up to three-and-a-half hours or intermittently for up to seven hours. Additionally, it will add a visual element to your surroundings with soft, LED color changing light.
And another thing to note is that there is no battery backup if you lose power for any reason the unit will stop operating. Cleaning is easy with just a cloth to wipe the exterior and a cotton swab or cloth to clean the interior. There is no need to use detergents, solvents or abrasive cleaners on the unit inside or out.
If a diffuser isn’t your thing, these essential oils can be mixed with a carrier oil (such as sweet almond) and massaged into the skin, used in your bath water, or added to water in a bottle as a room spray.
Gurunanda® offers very affordable diffusers and essential oils so that everyone can work this into their lives easier. All of their products are available in the pharmacy section of Walmart stores. I’m planning to buy a couple more of these small units soon. One will go to my other daughter for her birthday and the other will be set up either in my kitchen or mudroom where I spend most of my time daily.
The other diffuser I’m using is the artnaturals Bluetooth™ Oil Diffuser. This one is larger than the Gurunanda®, measuring 6-¾” X 6-¾” and has a 13.5 mL tank capacity. This equates to approx. 2 cups of water.
It also has timer controls allowing you to choose how long it operates (up to 9 hours) with automatic shut off when the water level gets too low, as well as a clock and alarm function. This makes it ideal for use in your bedroom in place of your regular alarm clock (though I didn’t see a battery backup on this unit, either, so maybe set a backup alarm on your phone in case of power outage).
The wooden-color cover gives it a nice decor look to accent your space, which I like. And it also cycles through red, orange, yellow, green, purple and clear LED lights during operation if you choose to press the “Light” button on the front of the unit to illuminate your space, and keep pressing it to select from the seven changing colors, one fixed color or no lights at all.
My favorite feature is the bluetooth compatibility, though. It allows you to play music wirelessly through the built-in speaker. To adjust the volume, press and hold the “Light” button to lower the volume and the “Mist” button to raise it.
There are so many single essential oil scents available, you will have to check out the company website to see them all. Included with the diffuser and 8-scent set I show here are Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sweet Orange and Tea Tree.
artnaturals offers oil blends, too. The two I’m trying out are :
Signature Zen – Blended with sweet orange, lavender, and rosemary to help decrease stress and tension, and relieve headache pain.
Signature Chi – Blended with tea tree, lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint, Siberian Fir Tree, cardamom, and European bay laurel leaf oils to ward off fatigue, fight allergies, and reduce overeating.
There are other oil blends to address everything from increasing energy and mental clarity to reducing anxiety and depression. Check them out and see which special blend will address the issues that affect your life the most.
If you’re not in the market for a diffuser, you can still benefit from any essential oil and their aromatherapeutic benefits. I’ve read that if you plan to use essential oils directly on skin that you should always mix them with a carrier oil first and do a spot test to check for skin sensitivity. Also, essential oils that contain citrus should be used with a bit of caution because exposure to direct sunlight can cause skin irritation.
Two new aromatherapy blends I’m also giving a try are from EO® Products Everyone™ Aromatherapy. Because, hey, why try one brand when you can try (and compare) three, right? I’ve tried other personal care products from this brand before and appreciate their commitment to natural, organic, GMO-free, cruelty-free products and eco-friendly practices.
Focus Blend – Lemon and rosemary along with peppermint and orange helps increase mental focus to help you pay more attention to the task at hand. You can also make an easy DIY Scalp Treatment by mixing 12 drops of Focus Blend with a teaspoon of Olive Oil and massaging into your scalp. Leave in for at least 15 minutes (or overnight) then shampoo and condition as usual.
My favorite of the two Everyone™ Aromatherapy oil blends I have is the Uplift Blend, though. With ylang ylang, cedarwood, grapefruit, orange, Frankincense, and Lavender and a little water in a spray bottle this DIY room spray is an instant mood lifter. No matter how “blah” I feel all it takes is a few spritzes of this spray to get me up and going on whatever my to-do list happens to consist of on any given day.
There are many ways to implement aromatherapy into your daily routine. As I already mentioned, you can use them in a diffuser, add a few drops to your bath water, mix with water to make a room spray, among others. But, there are many other personal care products available for face, hair, and body, too.
If you’re interested in aromatherapy and want an even simpler way to work it into your life you might check out this portable aromatherapy device that fits right into your purse or pocket.
