It is great to be an American. Yesterday, June 26, 2015 was a historic day. While it does not personally affect me, I am so thrilled that it changes so many lives.
I have been married for over 12 years. I cannot imagine being told I couldn’t marry my husband because of a personal choice. I never stopped to think about that happening to same sex relationships.
What business is it of people to dictate what I do in my own household? If there are two consenting adults in a loving relationship, why was there a law to tell them they could not get married?
I cannot imagine going through life loving and committing myself to someone without being married to them. I have heard a few people refer to marriage as “just a piece of paper.” I never saw marriage like that. Marriage is everything.
What defines a family? If my husband and I could not get married, we would still consider ourselves a family. Family is commitment, standing by each other through thick and thin, supporting one another and building a life together.
Even before we were married, we lived together soon after we started dating. I considered us a family. We were committed to each other. Even when we weren’t married, we lived and loved like we were. We didn’t have that “piece of paper” but we were committed to each other.
I cannot believe in our day in age, marriage equality was even an issue. I cannot imagine going through life having to hide your true self and then finally finding the love of your life and not being able to get “that piece of paper.”
Let’s celebrate love. Let’s celebrate marriage equality.
To me, family and marriage is commitment. It is dedication, sacrifice, family and love. Love prevails. Love wins.
