I first tried Chai Tea in 2001 when my husband and I were dating. Ever since then, I have been hooked.
Over the years, I have tried the powdered chai tea mix and the liquid concentrate where you add milk. I prefer the powdered chai tea mix because it isn’t as sweet tasting.
A few years ago, I found a recipe online and attempted to make it at home and it did not taste right at all. I am not sure what I did wrong. Maybe it needed to be mixed more and at the time, I did not have a blender.
Lately, I have been craving either chai tea or another favorite ice coffee drink that I enjoy. Unfortunately, we are unable to afford to buy either every day! I even looked at purchasing chai tea mix online. However, I ultimately decided to look online for a chai tea mix recipe (it was the same recipe from a few years ago) to make at home.
Chai Tea Recipe
1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 cup powdered non-dairy creamer
1 cup French Vanilla flavored powdered non-dairy creamer
2 ½ cups white sugar (can substitute 1 ½ cups Splenda or white sugar)
1 ½ cups unsweetened instant tea
2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon nutmeg – optional
1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. In a blender or food processor, blend 1 cup at a time, until mixture is the consistency of fine powder. Store in a cool, dry place, in an airtight container.
2. To serve: Stir 2 heaping tablespoons Chai Tea mixture into a mug of 6-8oz hot water.
I decided to give the recipe another whirl. This time around, we have a new blender, the Ninja. I used the Ninja to blend the mix into a powder. I did not have unsweetened instant tea. One person suggested using a tea bag, and luckily I have green tea and jasmine tea on hand. Instead of using 2 ½ cups of white sugar, I used about 1 ½ cups of white sugar and a packet of Truvia. Next time, I will also substitute Splenda!
By the way, my mix turned out great!
