Whether we like it or not, the ritual of spring cleaning has been around for centuries. I’ll be the first to admit, whenever I hear the term “spring cleaning”, I roll my eyes. I mean we clean our homes all the time, why do we need a huge seasonally related overhaul. I especially dread the overpowering aroma of chemical cleaning products. There must be a better way, which is why I’m giving my spring cleaning a natural refresh.
Did you know that the practice of spring cleaning may have originated with Judaism and the holiday of Passover? As part of the spring time holiday, you must rid your home of chametz, or bread, which means a thorough cleaning of every nook and cranny. Other theories also suggest spring cleaning may have started in China or Iran, where they celebrate the New Year in spring. As part of their celebrations, they clean or give their homes a complete refresh.
No matter what the reason is, spring cleaning should never be about chemical cleaning products. They aren’t good for the environment or our bodies. This is precisely why I decided to give the 100% vegan, cruelty-free products from Dirty Girl Farm a go this year. This Michigan-based brand was kind enough to send me their Lavender Dryer Bags, Lavender Body and Linen Spray, Tub Scrub, Everything Cleanser, and Yoga Mat Spray.
The first product I took for a spin, literally, was their Lavender Dryer Bags. These adorable little pouches not only smell amazing, but also help keep my clothes free of static cling. You can use each pouch up to 10 times. Then, Dirty Girl Farms recommends cutting them open, sprinkling them on your carpet and vacuuming them up. I love this idea for giving carpets a fresh clean scent.
Next up is the Tub Scrub. Formulated with baking soda, sea salt, and lavender and tangerine essential oils, the Tub Scrub is ideal for removing dirt and grim. It also has great anti-bacterial properties to ensure your tub or sink are free from germs. I used this scrub after giving my dog a bath. The result was a fresh, clean and shiny tub free of dog hair and wet dog smell.
I also tested out and loved the Yoga Mat Cleansing Spray. I must admit, I’ve never given much thought to cleaning the old yoga mat. Probably because the thought of using a typical chemical cleaner on the mat is so unappealing. After using the natural antibacterial, antifungal spray, I’m hooked. My mat smells so much fresher, thanks to a combination of lavender, lemongrass, patchouli, and rosemary essential oils.
One of my biggest pet peeves is using a cleanser that is so overpowering it makes me cough. I often wonder what I’m breathing into my lungs. With the Dirty Girl Farm Everything Cleanser, I no longer have to worry about what I’m spraying into the environment or my lungs, or getting on my skin. Not only does this cleanser have a nice light citrus scent, but it also helps naturally disinfect every surface of my home. You can even use it to clean the mirror. It doesn’t leave any smudges or streaks. Who doesn’t love a multipurpose product? I know I do.
The last product I received for review was the Lavender Body and Linen Spray. I’ve used all-natural linen and body sprays before and am a huge fan. Again, I like multi-tasking products, especially when they are vegan and cruelty-free. The soothing scent of lavender helps to refresh my linens and clothing. I’ve also used it as a body spray and really enjoyed it that way as well. I haven’t tested it out to see if can help me fall asleep faster yet. However, considering how much trouble I have falling asleep, I think it might be a wise idea. It is spring cleaning season, and I need all the rest I can get to get the job done.
How do you refresh your spring cleaning? What Dirty Girl Farm product would you most want to try?
