Calling all Disney film lovers, mark your calendars for September 23, 2016. Their newest offering is “Queen of Katwe,” set in Uganda and based on a true story about a young girl following her dream.
“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
You, lucky reader, get a first look at this film right here.
Directed by Mira Nair, the film stars Golden Globe® nominee David Oyelo wo (“Selma”), Oscar® winner and Tony Award® nominee Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga.
I’m a total sucker for a heart-warming true story. A major draw regarding this film is that Lupita Nyong’o is in it. I loved her in “12 Years a Slave” and am very excited to see her in a new role.
Anytime my family hears that a new Disney movie is on the horizon we immediately have to check out the trailer. Of course, we’ve long been fans of classic animated Disney films such as “Bambi”, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “Cinderella” (my personal favorite), “The Lion King” (my daughter’s first choice every time she’s asked), “The Aristocats” (one the whole family loves), among countless others. But, we also love Disney live action flicks like “Old Yeller”, “The Princess Diaries”, and the one that made me cry, “Bridge to Terabithia”.
Disney’s reputation for producing unique, quality family entertainment makes them the gold standard in our house. We have shelves full of DVDs, and I’d venture to say that at least half of them are Disney films. And, no, I’m not ashamed. We are true fans!
I will be eagerly anticipating “Queen of Katwe”, Twizzlers in hand. How about you?
