I bet reading the title of this post, made you either think, “Yeah right,” or “Let me get my spoon.” Regardless, of which camp you fall into, you can dig into a healthier ice cream with Halo Top.
So now, you’re probably wondering what is this magical Halo Top you speak of? I’ll tell you. Halo Top is a lower calorie, lower carb, lower sugar ice cream loaded with lots of protein. Each pint contains 24g of protein and between 240-360 calories. Not in one serving, I’m taking the entire pint. Halo Top also use all-natural, kosher and gluten-free ingredients to make each of their seventeen flavors.
As an ice cream lover, I couldn’t wait to redeem the very generous coupon Halo Top sent me. You should have seen the look the cashier gave me when I presented her with a coupon for four free pints of ice cream. It was priceless.
With so many flavors to choose from, I wasn’t sure which to pick. Should I go with the classic Chocolate or Vanilla, or go out of my comfort zone with Black Cherry and Pistachio? I opted for my all-time favorite Peanut Butter Cup, along with Mint Chip, S’mores, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I had a few hits and few misses with my picks.
My two favorite picks were Mint Chip (240 calories per pint) and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (360 calories per pint).
I’ve tried reduced calorie Mint Chip ice creams before and most don’t live up to the hype. They either taste very fake or have no flavor at all. This is not the case with Halo Top Mint Chip. It tastes just as good as any full fat, corn syrup filled ice cream. I would absolutely buy this ice cream again whenever I have a mint chip craving.
When I opened Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough I was fully expecting the typical vanilla ice cream with cookie dough pieces. Halo Top’s version of the classic treat is a revelation. Usually, I pick through the vanilla ice cream to get the cookie dough, but not with this ice cream. I don’t know how they did it, but this entire Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough pint tastes like actual cookie dough. It is amazing. I highly recommend trying it for yourself if you love the flavor of raw cookie dough.
Now on to my two misses, S’mores (320 calories per pint) and Peanut Butter Cup (320 calories per pint).
Before I talk about why they are misses for me, I will say ice cream flavor picks are subjective. While I might not have loved these, it doesn’t mean you won’t.
Peanut Butter and Chocolate is my absolute favorite ice cream flavor. This means I am super picky and judge it to a higher standard. While I like the peanut butter flavor in the Halo Top Peanut Butter Cup, I don’t enjoy the chocolate. It wasn’t chocolatey enough and had a pretty watered down flavor. I prefer my chocolate and peanut butter complement each other better.
The S’mores flavor was probably my least favorite of my four picks. I was hoping it would taste like a mix of graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate. Instead, it tastes like butterscotch and lacks any flavor profile variation. S’mores is a hard flavor to pull off and I have yet to find a brand that does it to perfection.
2 out of 4, isn’t so bad. Besides, I still have 13 other flavors to try out in the future.
