Awaken
By Sarah M. Ross

About the book:

Lucy Donovan was supposed to have a weekend of fun in the sun, celebrating her upcoming graduation from college. In a split second,
everything changed. A drunk driver ended Lucy’s mortal life.

Lucy opens her eyes to a world she never imagined possible and a new destiny: as a Patronus, a guardian of spirits. Adjusting to her new role and abilities while negotiating this confusing realm will test her limits and push her further than she ever dreamed she would go. From wayward spirits who don’t want her help to soul stealing vampires, and even a stuck-up British royal, Lucy must brave them all to save one spirit she can’t bear to lose.

Further complicating her confusing life is an inexplicable yet growing connection she feels to a member of her team, Max, whose mysterious behavior leaves her both confused and intrigued.  Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life.

My Review:

I found Awaken to be a creative and out of the norm read for me, I loved imagining the realm of Patronus and how they live and what they do.  Awaken brought me out of my every day life and into Lucy’s new world and discover Patronus along side her.  Lucy is about to graduate from college when she decides to go to the beach with her friends for the weekend.  On the way there, she is killed.  She wakes up in a mysterious place and finds new friends there who help her understand the new world she is in.  She meets Cassie, Adam, James, and Max.  Cassie becomes her best girlfriend she can confide in and have girl talk with.  Lucy is immediately attracted to Max and doesn’t quite know why, little does she know, he feels the same way.

I admire Lucy’s determination to fit in with her new friends and to learn everything she can.  Not only was this book set in another realm, it had paranormal aspects.  I found this book include interesting twists with people from our history helping Lucy along the way.  Throughout it all, she didn’t let anyone get in her way.

Even though Lucy was taken from her family, she discovers she has her own family in the new realm of Patronus.   They look out for each other as well as protect mortals who have passed away.

The ending will certainly have you scrambling to read the next book!
